Increase of the gross budget to 18400 € per year – Class XLII

The University of Milan strengthens its commitment to supporting young researchers by increasing the gross annual amount of the PhD scholarship, which will increase from 16,350 to 18,400 euros starting from Class XLII (academic year 2026/2027). 

The decision concerns all the research doctorates activated by the University after the XLI class and “is part of a vision, also typical of the University, which recognizes the doctorate as the highest level of university education and as a highly qualified intellectual work activity, fundamental for the scientific, cultural and economic development of the country”, as Rector Marina Brambilla recalled. 

 At the same time, the individual budget for research activities also increases, which for each PhD student of Class XLII is increased from 1,650 to 1,840 euros per year. With this decision, the University of Milan confirms its role in strengthening the attractiveness of the research system, enhancing merit, and supporting the creation of more suitable economic conditions for the growth of a new generation of researchers.  

The doctoral scholarships of the State University are provided in 5 scientific macro-areas (Life Sciences, Exact Sciences, Medical Sciences, Humanities, Legal, Economic and Social Policy Sciences) and an intersectoral course (an industrial doctorate also open to employees of institutions and companies engaged in highly qualified activities), for a total of 37 doctoral courses which will be active next academic year.
