Anaesthesia and acute/chronic pain management in horses: pharmacological and interventional techniques.

The first purpose of this project is to study the efficacy of an anaesthetic and analgesic protocol for the treatment of nociceptive and inflammatory perioperative acute pain in horses.
The secondary aim of the research project is to combine the interventional radiofrequency technique with a multimodal pharmacologic analgesic protocol for the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain of the distal limbs and of facet joints in equine patients, in order to improve the quality of life of the horses included and to reduce drug dosages and treatment frequency.
Results obtained during the first academic year could provide better perioperative management of acute nociceptive and inflammatory pain in horses, preventing the possible development of chronic neuropathic pain.
Data obtained from the second and third academic years will allow the efficacy of a multimodal analgesic strategy involving the association of a new combination of analgesic drugs and the use of the non-pharmacological interventional radiofrequency technique for the treatment of neuropathic chronic diseases in the equine patient.
In addition, it will be possible to assess the improvement in the quality of life of patients, together with a reduction in the number of treatments applied, dosages and adverse side effects.

Doctor Martina Amari graduated with honors at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Milan (UNIMI) in 2019, with an experimental thesis on the use of subcutaneous dexmedetomidine in horses.
In 2020 she continued her collaboration with the University of Milan (UNIMI) performing anaesthesia and analgesia of small and large animals, unconventional, zoo and wild animals and laboratory animals.
During 2020 she collaborated with Clinica Veterinaria Piola (Milan, Italy) dealing with emergencies and intensive care of horses.
Since 2022 she is a PhD student at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Milan (UNIMI), with a research project on pain management in horses.
She attended at different national and international congresses and courses regarding veterinary anaesthesiology.
