The use of essential oils and organic acids to reduce CO2 and methane in ruminants.

Dottorati PON – Bando 2021 – Ciclo 37 (XXXVII) –  DM 1061 del 10 agosto 2021

Azione IV.4 – Dottorati e contratti di ricerca su tematiche dell’innovazione

Azione IV.5 – Dottorati su tematiche Green

The objective of the project is to the production of greenhouse gases in ruminant animals This study will follow three steps: extraction of essential oils using the hot continuous extraction process and/or steam distillation, followed by the encapsulation of EOs according to the company’s protocol. To identify the reduction of the production of methane and CO2, the RUSITEC test will be conducted. The samples from the previous tests will be used to identify the rumen microbiome and how EOs could affect it. To finish, not less important, to identify how essential oils may affect the animal’s body system in vitro, using white blood.
The RUSITEC will be enrolled in the University of Leon (Spain) and a partnership with SILA, a company with a vast background in encapsulating different compounds.
The selected candidate will participate in the network’s training activities and work placements in the laboratories of the participating academic and industrial partners.
