Screening apparently healthy italian cats for occult cardiomyopathies.

This prospective study is first finalized to obtaining epidemiologic data about a large population of domestic cats both owned and stray in northern Italy and to know the prevalence of CM phenotypes (HCM and other phenotypes) in cats referred to veterinary teaching hospital of the university of Milan.
The correlation between the presence of clinical or subclinical CM and sex, age, body condition score (BCS), lifestyle (owned cat vs stray), presence of cardiac murmur or gallop sound will be also evaluated. Another point of interest of the study regards myocarditis/TMT, we will evaluate the prevalence in feline population and the correlation with cat’s lifestyle.
Finally, we would evaluate diagnostic tools available to the general practitioners including focused cardiac ultrasonography (FCU), NTproBNP rapid test and auscultation with electronical stethoscope for the diagnosis of occult CM, in particular, we would indagate in a large cohort of cats if these techniques performed alone or combined could help the nonspecialist clinician in the diagnosis of these occult diseases.
