Who funds coexistence with wildlife? An analysis of stakeholders’ perception of the costs related to conservation efforts.
Coexisting with wildlife consists of pursuing an equilibrium between accommodating wildlife behavioural dynamics and ensuring human needs’ satisfaction by balancing conservation efforts and conflict management.
Depending on the geo-socio-economic context, policymakers tend to prioritize certain stakeholders’ interests over others.
This project will focus on the perspective dualism of “farmers vs citizens” from an economic point of view.
Through a literature review, a qualitative approach (interviews) and a quantitative approach (contingent valuation and Likert scales) respectively, the relation between the study area’s socio-economic characteristics and the implementation of compensation systems, farmers’ disposition towards preventive measures against the damages caused by wildlife, and citizens’ willingness to financially support conservation efforts through public and personal spending will be investigated.
The main objectives of this research are to favour innovative wildlife management approaches by creating an extensive background of information regarding current critical issues and future opportunities, and to help Public Administrations understanding how to better allocate public resources depending on the context they operate in.
