VAS Talk: Anterior cruciate ligament transection model in rabbits for post-traumatic osteoarthritis studies
The PhD school in Veterinary and Animal Sciences is pleased to invite you to the second VAS Talk which will be delivered by Professor Mikko Finnilä, University of Oulu titled “Anterior cruciate ligament transection model in rabbits for post-traumatic osteoarthritis studies”.
The talk will cover a review of multimodal characterization of different knee tissues from a rabbit anterior cruciate ligament transection model, alongside related biomedical research on gene expression and fat pad composition.
These results highlight the complexity of functional and chemical changes occurring in the knee and illustrate how some of these changes may recover over time.
Dr. Finnilä gained his Ph.D. in 2014 from the University of Oulu. His early work was related to bone toxicity of persistent organic pollutants.
This work was interdisciplinary and realized as an international collaboration with partners from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), and Cranfield University (UK).
During his post-doctoral training, he started to work with osteoarthritis.
He joined Rami Korhonen’s group as part of Biophysics of Bone and Cartilage at the University of Eastern Finland.
As part of his post-doctoral training, Dr. Finnilä had longer research visit to the University of Calgary (Canada) in the Walter Herzog group.
In late 2017, Dr. Finnilä returned to Oulu to develop x-ray microtomographic imaging methods.
He was vice-head of the DIOS (Diagnostics of Osteoarthritis) group and the person in charge of the Biomedical Engineering subject.
In 2022 Dr. Finnilä established his group.
The group aims to identify more effective biomaterials.
They are currently focusing especially on the understanding role of oxygen sensing in osteoarthritis.
Furthermore, they evaluate the potential of treating osteoarthritis with biomaterials carrying therapeutic compounds by using state-of-the-art imaging methods.
