Combined mode of action of novel emulsifiers in monogastric diets to improve feed efficiency, animal welfare and mitigate the environmental impact.
Current European Legislation aims to enhance sustainability in livestock production by promoting strategies that improve animal welfare, reduce environmental impact, and optimize production costs. Emulsifiers are of significant interest in the feed industry due to their potential to reduce surface tension and distribution of water in pelleted feed, making the process less expensive.
Emulsifiers act also as surfactants improving oil droplet distribution in oil-in-water emulsions, increasing the active surface area for lipase to hydrolyze triglycerides. Beside their technological action, emulsifiers may also have a nutritional effect improving digestibility and absorption efficiency and leading to more sustainable practices by reducing the use of complex energy sources.
The aims of the research proposal will be to evaluate the impact of emulsifiers on a more sustainable energy utilization of monogastric animals, and to investigate the possible influence of interaction between emulsifiers and feed additives such as enzymes, antioxidants, medium chain fatty acids to improve the gut health, and potentially reduce the use of antibiotics.
