Exploring current digital techniques in histological analysis and simulation

The PhD school in Veterinary and Animal Sciences is pleased to invite you to the second VAS Talk which will be delivered by Professor Lorenzo Ressel, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Liverpool (UK) titled “Exploring Current Digital Techniques in Histological Analysis and Simulation”.

The Talk will cover the following topics, delving deeper into the technical aspects and analyzing the pros and cons of the following techniques:

  • Use of Artificial Intelligence for histological image analysis (Deep Learning).
  • 3D Histolog.
  • Photogrammetry for the creation/analysis of macroscopic lesions and the creation of interactive simulations.
  • Some first-hand experience will be presented, subject to device compatibility.

Lorenzo Ressel is Professor of Veterinary Pathology and Head of Department of Veterinary Anatomy Physiology and at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Institute Infection Veterinary and Ecological Sciences, University of Liverpool (UK). After the veterinary degree in 2005 (Italy), he gained a PhD in Veterinary Medicine (Pathology) and subsequently worked for couple of years in biomedical research assessing animal models for stem cell therapy and tissue engraftment. After some years spent in diagnostic histopathology and cytology, he was appointed Lecturer in Veterinary Pathology at the University of Liverpool. He gained the title of Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists by exam in 2015. He was appointed Senior Lecturer, and then in 2019 Professor of Veterinary Pathology. He is currently research active in topics which include animal models pathology and forensic veterinary pathology and application of digital technology to tissue morphology. Professor Ressel is author of more than 90 original contributions in peer reviewed scientific journals.
